On today’s show, we will be exploring the connection between mindset and creativity. Many of us believe that creativity is something we are born with, but research suggests that our mindset plays a crucial role in unlocking our creative potential. So let’s get into it.
First, let’s talk about how our mindset affects creativity.
If you recall from Episode 1 of The Miller Mindset Podcast, we discussed the key differences in a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. Those with a fixed mindset are tough to adapt to new concepts, and change. Their mind and their ideologies are fixed, or securely fastened in place. When we have a fixed mindset, we believe that our abilities and our talents are predetermined and inherent to who we are. Therefore, this things are unmovable to us, and they cannot be changed. This can lead to a fear of failure and a reluctance to take risks, which stifles creativity.
On the other hand, those with a growth mindset are more open to interpretation, change, and evolution of limited viewpoints into more rounded ones because they allow for the possibility that not everything is black and white. This allows them to believe that abilities can be developed through hard work and dedication to learning and performance. When we incorporate a growth mindset into our core being, it is this concept which enables us to take more risks and explore new ideas; fostering creativity.
So, how can we improve our creative flow? Here are five tips to get you started on the road to a more creative future:
Number 1:
Embrace failure – failure is a natural part of the creative process. It’s important to embrace it and use it as an opportunity to learn and grow.
One can compare the creative process to learning a new skill. Just like how we make mistakes and stumble while learning something new, we may encounter failures or setbacks while creating. Instead of getting discouraged, we can use these failures as a chance to refine our approach and improve our skills.
A famous example of this principle in action is the story of Thomas Edison, who famously said “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work” when experimenting with the design of the light bulb. His willingness to embrace failure and use it as a learning opportunity ultimately led to the invention of a practical and commercially viable electric light.
Number 2:
Take breaks – sometimes, stepping away from a project can help us see it from a fresh perspective. Taking breaks and doing something completely different can also help to spark new ideas.
Let’s say you’ve been working on a project for hours and feel stuck. Taking a break to go for a walk, listen to music, or do some yoga can help clear your mind and give you a fresh perspective. When you return to your project, you may find that you have a new idea or solution to a problem that you hadn’t thought of before.
Number 3:
Surround yourself with inspiration and inspirational people – whether it’s listening to music, browsing art, or reading books, surrounding yourself with inspiration can help to stimulate your creativity. Talk to a colleague. Get involved with a Mastermind group. I’m in a Mastermind group. They stimulate my creativity all of the time.
One example of surrounding yourself with inspiration to stimulate creativity is decorating your workspace with artwork, quotes, and images that inspire you. Keep your mind right. Keep it fluid. This can help to create a more inspiring environment and trigger creative ideas.
Number 4:
Practice mindfulness – being present in the moment and focusing on your breath can help to calm the mind and allow creative ideas to flow more freely if you are blocked. Baseball players do it. Everybody does it. You just got to take that break, focus up, and get to work.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed or stuck in a creative rut, taking a few deep breaths and focusing on the present moment can help to clear your mind and allow new ideas to emerge.
Number 5:
Collaborate – I mentioned that before when I spoke about the Mastermind group I am a part of. Working with others can provide new perspectives and ideas that you may not have thought of on your own.
It can grow you in whole new levels. As a matter of fact, my Mastermind group is currently taking on new members, and if you want to learn about how you can become a part of it, we come with a lot of cool stuff. It is more than just a group meeting every week. We learn from each other collaborate with together, and we grow together as businessmen and businesswomen. More importantly, we also share ideas, and tools, and how to use those tools to our advantages. Did you know that you could access a myriad of tools to help you automate your business just by being a member of my Mastermind group I am a member of? If you want to learn more about that, go to TW3Systems.com and click on membership, and read about it. Find out what our membership can do for you. It has done wonders for me.
But think about it. Imagine you are working with a group on a project. While brainstorming ideas, one person suggests a unique approach that you had not considered before. This idea sparks a conversation and leads to even more creative ideas being shared. Without the input of your group members, you may not have thought of this new perspective on your own, and the project could have turned out to suck, but instead you were able to create and innovation that changes the world. Imagine that. That’s the kind of thing I’m part of in my Mastermind group. You need to collaborate. That’s what I’m trying to say.
Conclusion
So, there you have it – the connection between mindset and creativity, and five tips to improve your creative flow.
